British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
