Crew Member Reveals Depression After Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.
